2021-22 Championship coaches

 

Congratulations to these eight coaches and their teams for reaching the pinnacle of Indiana high school basketball in the 2021-22 season. Here are brief biographies of each championship coach.

Boys

Jason DelaneyClass 4A: Jason Delaney guided Cathedral to a 26-6 record and Class 4A championship with a 65-31 victory over Chesterton. Along the way, the Irish also won the North Central Sectional, the Southport Regional and the Washington Semi-State. Delaney has a 114-35 record in six seasons at Cathedral and a 292-140 mark in 18 years overall. A 1995 graduate of Lafayette Central Catholic, he competed in basketball for the Knights. He attended Ball State, where he received a bachelor’s degree in secondary education in 2001. Delaney began his career as a head coach at Waldron in 2003-04, guiding the Mohawks to the Class A state title with a 27-0 record. He then coached at Southport for four seasons, Anderson Highland for one season, Indianapolis Washington for one season and Indianapolis Tech for five seasons – and winning the 2014 Class 4A state crown – before moving to Cathedral in 2016. He has the distinction of leading three schools to state titles. He currently works as the associate athletic director at Cathedral.

Mike RenfroClass 3A: Mike Renfro directed Beech Grove to a 22-6 record and Class 3A title with a 53-43 victory over Mishawaka Marian. The Hornets also won the Speedway Sectional, Greencastle Regional and Washington Semi-State. In four seasons as a head coach, Renfro’s teams posted a 74-27 record with four sectional titles. He previously was an assistant to Matt English for three seasons at Beech Grove. Renfro is a 1995 graduate of Beech Grove, where he is the all-time leading scorer in basketball with 1,860 points. He went to Allegany College in Maryland for two years, then completed his college career with two seasons at Hofstra – graduating in 1999 – while playing for coach Jay Wright. Renfro stepped down from his teaching and coaching positions at Beech Grove in August.

Ryan MillerClass 2A: Ryan Miller led Providence to a 21-6 season and Class 2A title with a 62-49 victory over Central Noble. On the way, his team won the Southwestern (Hanover) Sectional, the Southridge Regional and the Seymour Semi-State. This was his second sectional title and the first crown at the other levels. Miller is 51-22 in three seasons as a varsity head coach. He previously was an assistant for five seasons in two stints at Providence and five seasons at Floyd Central. He returned to Providence as head coach in 2019. Miller is a 1999 graduate of Providence and played basketball for two seasons at Eastern Kentucky University. He is a 2004 graduate of Indiana University and earned an M.D. from the University of Louisville in 2010. Miller is in his fourth year as the Providence director of advancement.

Brent DalrympleClass A: Brent Dalrymple guided North Daviess to a 27-3 record and Class A title with a 48-46 victory in overtime over Lafayette Central Catholic. Along the way, the Cougars also captured a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference co-championship as well as titles in the Loogootee Sectional, the Loogootee Regional and the Seymour Semi-State. In 22 seasons as the Cougars’ varsity boys’ basketball coach, Dalrymple holds a 316-213 overall record. His teams have won six SWIAC titles as well as six sectionals and three regionals. Dalrymple is a 1988 graduate of Rushville and a 1992 graduate of Saint Joseph’s College. He was an assistant coach for five seasons at Shelbyville before becoming the head coach at North Daviess in 2000. Dalrymple also serves as the athletic director at North Daviess.

Girls

Donna BuckleyClass 4A: Donna Buckley led Noblesville to a 25-4 season and the Class 4A title with a 76-52 victory over Franklin Community. En route, the Millers won the Westfield Sectional, the Marion Regional and the Logansport Semi-State. Buckley has a 208-118 record in 14 seasons with Noblesville and a 304-192 record in 22 seasons as a head coach. Buckley started her coaching career at South Adams as an assistant coach for three seasons. She became the head coach at Fort Wayne South for one season in 2000-01 with a 10-11 record. She moved to Greenfield-Central, where her teams posted an 86-63 ledger in seven seasons, including a sectional crown in 2004. Her Noblesville teams have won three sectionals. The former Donna McCarty is a 1993 graduate of Clinton Central, where she played for Hall of Fame coach Linda Barnett. She attended Taylor University, where she played basketball for two seasons. Buckley is a teacher at Noblesville, where she teaches classes on avoiding substance abuse.

Steve ReynoldsClass 3A: Steve Reynolds directed South Bend Washington to a 27-3 record and the Class 3A title with a 93-35 victory over Silver Creek. The Panthers also won the Northern Indiana Conference, the South Bend Washington Sectional, the Jimtown Regional and the LaPorte Semi-State. Reynolds has a career record of 119-81 in eight seasons as a varsity coach, all at South Bend Washington. He previously was a middle school boys coach for one season, a girls’ assistant for one season at South Bend Riley and a girls’ assistant for two seasons at South Bend Washington. Reynolds is a 1998 graduate of South Bend Riley, where he was a basketball standout. He went on to play two seasons each at Treasure Valley Community College in Oregon and at Western Michigan University. He later played professionally in Norway and Austria and semi-pro basketball in the International Basketball League. He has bachelor’s degrees from WMU and Bethel University. He is in his second year as a guidance specialist for South Bend Community Schools.

Tony HasenourClass 2A: Tony Hasenour guided Forest Park to a 26-3 ledger and the Class 2A title with a 52-44 victory over Frankton. Along the way, the Lady Rangers also claimed trophies in the Forest Park Sectional, Crawford County Regional and Jasper Semi-State. Hasenour is 104-48 in six seasons with three sectional titles in the top job with the Forest Park girls, including sectional titles in 2017, 2021 and 2022. He previously coached the Lady Rangers’ junior varsity team to a 203-93 mark over 16 seasons. A 1995 graduate of Forest Park, Hasenour played high school basketball for one season. He went on to attend Ball State University, graduating in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in secondary social studies education and history. In 2005, he earned a master’s degree in secondary education from Indiana University-Southeast. Hasenour began his coaching career in 2000-01 as the girls’ JV coach at Forest Park. He is in his 23rd year as a teacher at Forest Park. He currently teaches eighth-grade social studies, high school world history and high school geography.

Adam LubbehusenClass A: Adam Lubbehusen led Tecumseh to a 21-8 record and the Class A title with a 60-53 victory over Lafayette Central Catholic. En route, the Braves won the Wood Memorial Sectional, the West Washington Regional and the Jeffersonville Semi-State. Lubbehusen compiled a 114-75 record in eight seasons as the girls’ varsity coach at Tecumseh. He began his coaching career in 2006 as the Tecumseh seventh-grade boys’ coach and followed by coaching the Tecumseh boys’ freshman team for three years. He then was a Tecumseh girls’ assistant for four seasons before becoming the team’s varsity coach in 2014. He currently is a boys’ assistant at Heritage Hills. Lubbehusen is a 2001 graduate of Tecumseh, where he competed in basketball, cross country, track and baseball. He is a 2005 graduate of Oakland City University, where he competed in basketball and cross country and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. He now is in his 18th year as a full-time farmer and as a part-time worker for United Parcel Service.
