IBCA Challenge Cup

The Challenge Cup concept went through adversity as an event because of COVID-19 in 2020-21.

Originally planned to be the eighth year of an Indiana vs. Kentucky event, the five-game interstate format was changed to a three-game Indiana-only format when the Kentucky schools were not going to be allowed to play because of the pandemic.

Then as the event got closer, the three-game Indiana-only event that was to be played on Jan. 9 at New Castle was canceled. So unfortunately, girls’ teams from Crown Point and Linton-Stockton as well as boys’ teams from South Bend St. Joseph, Columbus North, Gary West and Floyd Central did not get a chance to square off.

For 2021-22, the status of the IBCA Challenge Cup is uncertain. Tentative plans are for the event to be played as an Indiana-only competition, likely having teams from northern Indiana facing teams from southern Indiana. The date, site and exact number of games for the coming season remain to be determined.

An IBCA committee will choose the teams for the event. If your team is interested, please contact IBCA assistant director Tom Beach at tabeach@anderson.edu.

This is not an “exempt” event, so playing in this event must be within the IHSAA schedule limits.
