Brief biographies of the eight state championship coaches from the 2018-19 season.
Boys
Class 4A: Ryan Osborn guided Carmel to a 26-1 season and the Class 4A title with a 60-55 victory over Ben Davis. Earlier, the Greyhounds also claimed titles in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference, the Carmel Sectional, the Logansport Regional and the Lafayette Semi-State. Osborn has a two-year record of 47-9 as a varsity head coach with one MIC, two sectional, two regional and two semi-state crowns in addition to the one state championship. He is a 1999 graduate of Logansport High School and a 2004 graduate of IUPUI. He previously was an assistant coach at IUPUI, Lebanon, Avon and Carmel prior to becoming the Greyhounds’ varsity coach.
Class 3A: Brandon Hoffman directed Silver Creek a 25-3 slate and a Class 3A crown with a 52-49 triumph over Culver Academy. In nine seasons, Hoffman has guided the Dragons to a 151-67 record with three Mid-Southern Conference crowns, five sectional trophies, one regional title, one semi-state crown and one state championship. He is a 1998 graduate of Silver Creek and a 2002 graduate of Hanover College. He previously was the Silver Creek JV coach for seven seasons before becoming the Dragons’ varsity coach.
Class 2A: Brad Stangel led Andrean to a 21-8 ledger that included a 59-54 decision over Linton-Stockton for the Class 2A state title. In three seasons, Stangel has a 56-23 mark with the 59ers. Stangel is a 1996 graduate of Monroe (Wis.) High School and a 2004 graduate of Wisconsin-Platteville. He played on two NCAA Division III national championship teams at UW-Platteville in 1998 and 1999. Stangel was a college assistant for two seasons at Edgewood (Wis.) College and five seasons at UW-Platteville before hired as the Andrean coach in May 2016.
Class A: Marc Davidson directed Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian to a 28-2 campaign that included a 60-43 victory over Barr-Reeve for the Class A championship. Davidson’s teams have compiled a 123-44 slate in six seasons with the Braves, and he is 208-114 in 14 seasons as a boys’ varsity coach. Earlier, the team won the Fremont Sectional, Triton Regional and Elkhart Semi-State. Davison previous coached three seasons at Macomb Christian (Mich.), two seasons at Trinity International University in Illinois, one season at Aurora Christian (Ill.), two seasons at Dominion Christian (Va.) and two seasons at Lakewood Park Christian. He is a 1991 graduate of Aurora Christian and a 1995 graduate of Trinity International University. At Blackhawk Christian, the Braves have won five sectionals, two regionals and one semi-state.
Girls
Class 4A: Chris Huppenthal directed Hamilton Southeastern a 27-1 record, including a 55-44 victory over Lawrence North for the Class 4A title. The Royals also won Hoosier Crossroads Conference, Hamilton Southeastern Sectional, Kokomo Regional and LaPorte Semi-State titles. Huppenthal is 424-114 in 23 seasons as a girls’ basketball varsity coach, including a 249-76 mark in 14 seasons with the Royals. He previously was the head coach at Highland for eight seasons and Kokomo for one year. Huppenthal is a 1984 graduate of Highland High School and a 1989 graduate of Ball State. He was the Highland girls’ JV coach for two seasons before becoming a varsity coach.
Class 3A: Kathie Layden guided Northwestern to a 27-3 record and a 61-39 triumph over Benton Central for the Class 3A championship. Layden has compiled a 125-48 slate in seven seasons with the Tigers and has a career record of 307-148 over 19 seasons as a varsity coach that includes 11 seasons at Tri-Central and one season at Western. She is a graduate of Taylor High School and the University of Evansville. Layden began her coaching career as an assistant for one season at Tri-Central. She then became the Trojans’ varsity coach in the spring of 1999 and guided that program to a 171-90 mark, including Class A state crowns in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
Class 2A: Todd Law led Oak Hill to a 25-3 season that included a 54-42 triumph over Winchester for the Class 2A championship. His teams also won Central Indiana Conference, Manchester Sectional, Eastern (Greentown) Regional and Logansport Semi-State titles. Law is 289-75 in 15 seasons as Oak Hill’s girls’ varsity coach. His Golden Eagles have captured seven sectional, five regional, four semi-state crowns. Law is a 1984 graduate of Oak Hill and a 1988 graduate of Taylor University. He began coaching middle school boys’ basketball while in college, was the boys’ varsity coach at Southwood for six seasons and was a girls’ middle school coach at Southwood prior to taking over the Oak Hill girls’ varsity.
Class A: Katie Collignon directed Marquette Catholic to a 27-2 season that included a 57-36 decision over Vincennes Rivet for the Class A title. Collignon is 75-10 in three seasons as the coach of the Blazers. The Michigan native and Ferris State University graduate previously was an assistant coach for four seasons with the Valparaiso University women’s basketball program.
