From the Executive Director

By Steve Witty

Steve WittyI hope everyone has had a great start to another school year. Each season, players, coaches and the school community begin a new journey together. Teaching and coaching is a great profession. It provides opportunities for coaches to make a difference in the lives of the many student-athletes we serve by helping them grow through their involvement in the game we all know and love.

This past summer was a busy time for your professional organization. The first year of the NCAA men’s basketball recruiting calendar changes that allowed scholastic events conducted by coaches’ associations during the last two weekends in June was a huge success. More than 250 college coaches attended both events.

A special thanks to Marty Johnson, Kathie Layden, Renee Turpa, Tom Beach, Jane Schott and Brian Satterfield for their efforts in organizing both the boys’ and girls’ Showcase events. We appreciate the efforts of the Charlie Hughes Committee that joined forces with the IBCA to successfully organize the IBCA/IHSAA Team Showcase event in memory of a long-time basketball advocate Charlie Hughes. One hundred five schools participated in the first scholastic event.

Another successful Indiana-Kentucky All-Star event was held under the direction of first year All-Star Games Director Mike Broughton. Indiana won three of the four games with Kentucky.

We encourage all boys and girls Head Coaches to have their elementary, junior high and assistant coaches join the IBCA. New this year among the many benefits of joining the IBCA, the liability insurance has been increased to $2 million for every active elementary, junior high, assistant and head coach. In this world of litigation, this is a huge benefit. Remember, to vote or nominate players for special recognition, you must be a current-year member of the IBCA. Watch your e-mail in January for voting and nominating procedures and deadlines.

We appreciate all the support of your professional organization. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact your IBCA representatives.

Best wishes for a successful season.
