2013 Championship coaches

 

Boys

Class 4A: Scott Heady, Carmel. Heady guided the Greyhounds to a 25-2 record and they defeated Cathedral 57-53 in the state championship game. Heady is 58-19 in three seasons at Carmel and 274-146 in 18 seasons as a high school head coach. He previously coached at Connersville and Warren Central. Heady is a graduate of Shenandoah High School and the University of Indianapolis.

Class 3A: Stacy Meyer, Greensburg. Meyer directed the Pirates to a 26-1 season, including a 73-70 win over Fort Wayne Concordia in overtime for the 3A state title. Meyer has a record of 118-47 in seven seasons at Greensburg and is 176-103 in 12 seasons as a head coach. A graduate of Greensburg and Hanover College, he previously was head coach at Southwestern (Shelby) and Whiteland.

Class 2A: Marvin Rea, Bowman Academy. Rea’s Eagles went 18-9 last season, including claiming the Class 2A state championship with an 86-73 victory over Linton-Stockton. Rea is 97-41 in six seasons as coach at Bowman Academy. He is a graduate of Gary Roosevelt, where he was named winner of the IHSAA Trester Award in 1987. He later played two seasons at Purdue, graduating in 1991. His Bowman team also was a state champion in 2010.

Class A: Doc Nash, Borden. Nash coached the Braves to a 55-50 victory over Triton for the Class A state championship to cap a 24-3 season. Nash, a 1997 graduate of New Washington High School and a 2002 graduate of Manchester College, is 116-49 in seven seasons at Borden. Nash previously was the JV coach for four seasons at Austin. He played basketball for two seasons at Olney Central College and for two seasons at Manchester College.

Girls

Class 4A: Kurt Godlevske, Bedford North Lawrence. Godlevske directed the Lady Stars to a 28-0 record, including a 54-51 victory over Fort Wayne South for the 4A state championship. He guided the BNL girls to a 120-41 record in seven seasons and accepted a job as a women’s basketball assistant at Butler University late last spring. Godlevske was a men’s basketball assistant at Lake Superior State University in Michigan, a boys’ head coach at L’Anse (Mich) High, a boys’ assistant at Lawrence North and a boys’ and girls’ head coach at Newberry (Mich.) High. His overall record as a head coach is 177-116. He is a graduate of L’Anse High School and Northern Michigan University.

Class 3A: Julie Shelton, Mt. Vernon (Fortville). Shelton guided the Marauders to a 61-47 triumph over Hamilton Heights for the Class 3A state title, capping a 23-4 season. It was the second consecutive state finals appearance for Shelton, who has compiled a 242-102 record in 16 seasons at Mt. Vernon. Shelton was a star player at Seymour High School, helping the Owls to the 1987 state finals, and Butler University, where she still holds the school’s all-time scoring record. She was an assistant basketball coach and head volleyball coach at Mt. Vernon before becoming the varsity girls basketball coach.

Class 2A: Steve Goans, Evansville Mater Dei. Goans directed the Wildcats to a 28-2 mark that included a 62-42 win over Eastern (Greentown) for a second consecutive state championship. Goans has posted a 109-37 record the past six seasons at Mater Dei and has a 181-120 mark in two stints with the Wildcats totaling 15 seasons (he has coached the team from 1980-89 and from 2007-present). Goans is a 1976 graduate of Mater Dei, and his teams won sectionals in 1986, 2010, 2012 and 2013.

Class A: Wayne Kreiger, Fort Wayne Canterbury. Kreiger took over the Cavaliers last season and guided the team to a 25-3 season, including a 42-35 victory over Vincennes Rivet in the Class A state championship game. Kreiger was the longtime coach at Columbia City, guiding the Eagles to a 520-222 record over 33 seasons from 1977-2010. He also coached in the West Noble and Huntington County school systems and was the Columbia City boys’ basketball coach for two years before taking over the girls’ program. Kreiger, a Canterbury girls’ assistant for two years after leaving Columbia City and before becoming the Cavs’ head coach, was inducted to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. He graduated from Huntington Township High School in 1960 and Manchester College in 1964.
