Indiana All-Stars

By Charlie Hall

Charlie HallThis is the 75th year for Indiana All-Star Teams. The first Boys All-Star was chosen in 1939, so some special steps are planned to remember the history of this long-running program.

The 2013 Girls All-Stars have been chosen, and there was a close race for Miss Basketball between two All-Americans – winner Stephanie Mavunga of Brownsburg and runner-up Taya Reimer of Hamilton Southeastern. Just five votes separated the two.

We are in the process of selecting the Boys All-Star team now. We have an eight-game winning streak on the Boys side, and our talented Girls team will be looking to start a winning run on June 14 in Louisville.

We are going to try a few new things to connect with our fans and continue to grow the games. We are working on creating a “Hoopfest” on the June 15 game day at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. We’re going to put up some goals outside the Fieldhouse and have some Hall of Fame players and coaches manning them. You can bring your youngster by on the way into the game and get a quick shooting lesson to take back to the driveway. Sam Alford, Judi Warren and Jan Conner are among those who already have committed to help.

Another new item this year is free parking for our long-time season-ticket holders. Also, any IBCA member coach who wants to bring his team to the game may purchase tickets for just $8 apiece as long as you bring at least a party of 10 (these tickets typically sell for $16 each). Contact me at chall33@msn.com or call (765) 480-2665 if you are interested in this special ticket opportunity.

Last year, following expenses, we were able to divide more than $30,000 of net profits from the 2012 All-Star Games between the IBCA Scholarship Fund, the Indiana National Guard and the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. The All-Star Games always have belonged to the coaches and players. The IBCA’s direct involvement has allowed us to experiment with new ideas. If you have any thoughts or ideas, please let me or Steve Witty know.

Kentucky moved its home portion of the series back to Freedom Hall in 2012 and had its best crowd in years.

The Pacers have continued to support Indiana high school basketball, working with organizers to allow the All-Star Games to be played in Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Indianapolis Star, under its IndyStar.com brand, returns as our title sponsor. Rob New has signed on again as our presenting sponsor. Methodist Sports Medicine again is providing us with doctors and athletic trainers, and Marian University again will act as our training site.

I could go on and on with all the people who make this event a success. Suffice it to say: We are in great shape because of all of you. Thank you all.

See you June 15!
