IBCA Aspiring Head Coaches Program

The IBCA established an Aspiring Head Coaches Program that began last school year with support from the IHSAA and the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. This program is designed to create an awareness of the necessary skills to becoming a head coach. The first-year program was well received, and 25 coaches completed the program.

This program is designed to help participants prepare for the next step in their career by building an awareness of the skills, proficiencies and professional standards necessary to become a successful head coach. The IBCA’s goal is to help each participant be better prepared and more confident when an opportunity to lead arrives.

In 2026-27, the course includes the topics on the following days – Sept. 27 (in-person meeting), Feb. 7 (a Zoom meeting) and April 22-23 (an in-person meeting where registration and attendance at the 2027 IBCA Clinic is required). At the final meeting, those who are a part of all meetings will receive a “Certificate of Completion” that can be presented to potential employers when one has a job interview.

In addition, this program qualifies for “Professional Growth Points” that may help teachers with license renewal.

The IBCA’s Aspiring Coaches Program is overseen by Kip Staggs, former boys’ basketball coach/athletic director at Martinsville, and Doug Springer, girls’ basketball coach at Northridge.

The deadline to register for the 2026-27 program was Sept. 21. If you did not join for this season but are interested for the future, the IBCA encourages you to join in the fall of 2027 for the 2027-28 season.

If you have questions about the Aspiring Head Coach Program, please contact Coach Staggs (kip.staggs@gmail.com) or Coach Springer (springerd@mcsin-k12.org).

HAPPY GRAD DAY:Twenty-five coaches completed the inaugural IBCA Aspiring Head Coach Program at the 2026 IBCA Clinic at Mt. Vernon (Fortville). The program is being offered again in 2026-27.
