Indiana All-Star report

My seventh year as game director of the Indiana All-Stars produced quality games that were well played by both Indiana and Kentucky.

In the Friday games held at Lexington Catholic High School, the Hoosier girls started well by leading the Kentucky girls 22-10 after the first quarter. That lead was short lived as over the next three quarters, the Kentucky squad dominated the boards and erased a 12-point Indiana lead in running away from the Hoosiers and coasting to an 84-73 victory. Kentucky outrebound Indiana 63-39. The Hoosiers were led in scoring by Miss Basketball Maya Makalusky with 18 points and Monique Mitchell with 12 points. Brooke Winchester played a strong game defensively with 12 rebounds.

The boys’ game in Lexington was one of the most exciting games played by both teams in several years. The game had 13 lead changes with Indiana fighting back and outscoring Kentucky 57-45 in the second half to win 98-89 in a hard-fought battle. Indiana was outstanding from the 3-point line, shooting 10-of-22 for 46 percent. Mr. Basketball Braylon Mullins led the Hoosiers with 24 points, Michael Cooper provided 21 points on 6-of-8 3-point shooting and Tre Singleton added 14 points. Mark Zachery IV played a fantastic floor game with12 points and six assists.

On Saturday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the girls’ contest was one of the highest-scoring encounters on record. A hard-fought game, Indiana led 35-32 at the half. The game had 13 lead changes with Kentucky winning 106-103 in double overtime. Maya Makalusky led the Hoosier squad with 29 points and 14 rebounds. Four other players scored double figures – Jaylah Lampley with 17, Addison Baxter with 17, Laila Abdurraquib with 11 and Monique Mitchell with 10. The Wooden/MCL Citizenship Award went to Ella Bobe of South Knox.

In the boys’ contest at the Fieldhouse, Indiana dominated from start to finish. Indiana led 50-32 at the half and increased their advantage throughout the second half before winning 105-92. Braylon Mullins scored 20 points to lead six Hoosiers in double figures. He was joined by Brady Koehler with 12 points, Tre Singleton with 12 points, Justin Kirby with 11 points, Mark Zachery IV with 10 points and Michael Cooper with 10 points. The 2025 boys Indiana All-Stars were very unselfish and one of the best Hoosier squads in recent history. The Wooden/MCL Citizenship Award went to Azavier Robinson of Lawrence North.

Looking ahead to 2026, dates for the Indiana/Kentucky All-Star senior doubleheaders have been set for Friday, June 5 in Kentucky and Saturday, June 6 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Sites for the other All-Star week doubleheaders have not yet been determined. The dates have been set; they are – Indiana Juniors vs. Kentucky Juniors on Sunday, May 31; the All-Star Futures Games doubleheader on Monday, June 1; and the Junior-Senior exhibition contests on Wednesday, June 3.

Currently, I am preparing to travel across Indiana in the 2025-26 season to find the best 24 seniors – 12 boys and 12 girls for the 2006 All-Star teams. I look forward to seeing the best of Indiana high school basketball.

As I stated in the past, in 49 states it is just basketball, but this is Indiana. Let our schools and fans across the state pull together and have a great 2025-26 school year in all academic and athletic endeavors.
