Congratulations to these eight coaches and their teams for reaching the pinnacle of Indiana high school basketball in the 2020-21 season. Here are brief biographies of each championship coach.
Boys
Class 4A: Ryan Osborn guided Carmel to a 26-2 season that included the Class 4A state championship. Along the way, the Greyhounds also won the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference, Carmel Sectional, Logansport Regional and Lafayette Semi-State. In four seasons as the Carmel head coach, Osborn has a 91-18 record with four sectional, three regional, three semi-state and two state titles with another 4A state crown in 2019. Osborn is a 1999 graduate of Logansport High School. He attended Butler University for one semester, then transferred to IUPUI where he played three seasons of basketball. He graduated from IUPUI in 2004 and later earned a master’s degree in 2009 from A.T. Still University in Mesa, Ariz. He served as a basketball assistant at IUPUI, Avon and Carmel prior to being named Carmel’s head coach. Osborn also served as the Indiana All-Star head coach in 2021, leading the team to a sweep of Kentucky. He teaches physical education at Carmel.
Class 3A: Brandon Hoffman directed Silver Creek to a 25-4 slate and the Class 3A title. The team also captured championships in the Mid-Southern Conference, Charlestown Sectional, Washington Regional and Seymour Semi-State. In 11 seasons, Hoffman has guided the Dragons to a 201-73 record with five MSC crowns, seven sectional trophies, two regional titles, two semi-state crowns and two state titles (also winning the 3A crown in 2019). Hoffman is a 1998 graduate of Silver Creek and a 2002 graduate of Hanover College. He previously was the Silver Creek JV coach for seven seasons before becoming the Dragons’ varsity coach. Hoffman teaches health and physical education at Silver Creek.
Class 2A: Marc Davidson led Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian to a 28-3 campaign that included the Class 2A championship. Davidson’s teams have compiled a 174-50 slate in eight seasons with the Braves, and he is 259-120 in 16 seasons as a boys’ varsity coach. Earlier, the team won the Bluffton Sectional, North Judson Regional and Elkhart Semi-State. Davidson previous coached three seasons at Macomb Christian (Mich.), two seasons at Trinity International University in Illinois, one season at Aurora Christian (Ill.), two seasons at Dominion Christian (Va.) and two seasons at Lakewood Park Christian. He is a 1991 graduate of Aurora Christian and a 1995 graduate of Trinity International University. At Blackhawk Christian, the Braves have won seven sectionals, three regionals, two semi-states and two state titles, including the Class A crown in 2019. Davidson teaches health and physical education at Blackhawk Christian.
Class A: Josh Thompson guided Barr-Reeve to a 29-2 season that included the Class A state crown. Earlier, the Vikings won the Blue Chip Conference, North Daviess Sectional, Loogootee Regional and Washington Semi-State. Thompson is 80-6 in three seasons at Barr-Reeve with two conference, two sectional, two regional and two semi-state crowns. He has a career record of 190-162 with previous stops at Springs Valley, Wood Memorial and Vincennes Lincoln as a head coach. He began his career as an assistant coach to Ron McBride at Bloomfield. He also assisted Hall of Fame coach Steve Brett at Loogootee for four years. Thompson is a 1999 graduate of Bloomfield High School, where he played on the Cardinals’ 1998 Class A state runner-up team. He played one season of basketball at Hanover College and completed his bachelor’s degree in education at Indiana University in 2003. He later earned a master’s degree from Olivet Nazarene University in 2005 and an administrator’s license from Oakland City University in 2006. Thompson was an assistant coach for the 2021 Indiana Junior All-Stars. Thompson teaches physical education at Barr-Reeve.
Girls
Class 4A: Chris Seibert led Crown Point to a 25-1 season that included the Class 4A state championship. Earlier, his team captured titles in the Duneland Conference, Chesterton Sectional, LaPorte Regional and LaPorte Semi-State. He is 128-29 in six seasons with the Bulldogs, including three conference championships, three sectional championships and two regional championships. Seibert has a 187-106 record in 12 seasons as a girls’ varsity coach. He previously was the coach at Portage for six seasons, and he also was the boys’ varsity coach at Hammond Morton for one season. Seibert is a 2001 graduate of Valparaiso High School, where he played basketball and baseball. He attended Valparaiso University, graduating in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. In 2010, he earned a master’s degree in educational administration from Purdue University. Seibert began his coaching career in 2002-03 as an assistant JV girls’ coach at Wheeler. He was a boys’ basketball varsity assistant at Wheeler for five seasons before going to Hammond Morton. Seibert teaches physical education at Crown Point.
Class 3A: Scott Schoen directed Silver Creek to a 25-3 season that included the Class 3A state championship. Along the way, the Dragons also won the Mid-Southern Conference, the Madison Sectional, the Charlestown Regional and the Jeffersonville Semi-State. In 11 seasons with the Silver Creek girls, Schoen’s teams have compiled a 155-108 record with two sectional titles, one regional crown, one semi-state trophy and one state crown. Schoen is a 1993 graduate of South Central High School in Elizabeth, Ind., where his father Randall was a long-time girls’ basketball coach. Schoen competed in basketball, baseball, cross country and track all four years of high school. After high school, Schoen played basketball at Brescia College and Georgetown College in Kentucky. Schoen earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisville in 2000 and a master’s degree from Louisville in 2001. He began his coaching career as a boys’ basketball assistant at North Harrison from 1999-2001. He was the boys’ varsity head coach at Shoals from 2001-04, then was a men’s basketball assistant at Georgetown College for one season and a girls’ basketball assistant for his father for three seasons at South Central before taking over as the girls’ varsity coach at Silver Creek in 2010-11. Schoen teaches health and Colleges & Careers at Silver Creek.
Class 2A: Jared Rehmel guided Linton-Stockton to a 27-1 season that included a second consecutive Class 2A state crown. Along the way, the Miners won the Southwestern Indiana Conference, North Knox Sectional, Crawford County Regional and Jasper Semi-State. In seven seasons at Linton-Stockton, Rehmel’s teams have compiled a 106-72 ledger. Rehmel is a 2006 graduate of Shakamak High School, where he competed in basketball and baseball and helped the Lakers to baseball Class A state runner-up finishes in 2004 and 2006. Rehmel played basketball at Olney Central College, collecting NCJAA honorable mention All-America status, the University of Central Arkansas and the University of Southern Indiana. Rehmel earned an associate’s degree from Olney Central in 2009 and a bachelor’s degree from USI in 2012. He started his coaching career as a basketball assistant at USI in 2011-12, working with the Screaming Eagles’ men’s and women’s teams in strength and conditioning. He works as a management analyst for Amentum in Odon, Ind.
Class A: Jeff Brooke led Pioneer to a 25-4 season that included the Class A state championship. Earlier, the Panthers captured the Tri-County Sectional, Caston Regional and Logansport Semi-State. In five seasons as the Pioneer girls varsity coach, Brooke’s squads have amassed an 80-46 record with one Hoosier North Conference co-championship as well as titles in three sectionals, two regionals and two semi-states. Brooke is a 1993 graduate of Clinton Prairie High School, where he competed in basketball, golf and track. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Purdue in 1998 and a master’s degree from Ball State in 2013. Brooke previously was a boys’ basketball assistant for 11 years over two stints at Rossville, a boys’ basketball head coach for one year at Delphi and a girls’ basketball assistant at Pioneer for three years. He currently also serves as principal at Pioneer.
