2019-2020 Boys Coaches of the Year

 
 
 

Congratulations to the 2019-2020 Bob King Award winners as Boys' Coaches of the Year.

District 1

Marc Davidson, Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian

Marc DavidsonMarc Davidson is an IBCA District 1 Coach of the Year after leading Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian to a 23-3 season that included championships of the Noblesville Holiday Tournament and Manchester Sectional.

In seven seasons with the Braves, Davidson’s teams have compiled a 146-47 record, including six sectionals, two regionals, one semi-state and one state title. In 14 seasons as a boys’ varsity coach, his teams have compiled a 231-117 ledger.

Davidson previously coached three seasons at Macomb Christian (Mich.), two seasons at Trinity International University in Illinois, one season at Aurora Christian (Ill.), two seasons at Dominion Christian (Va.) and two seasons at Lakewood Park Christian. At Trinity International, he guided the Trojans to the 2007 NAIA National Tournament and was named an NAIA District Coach of the Year.

Davidson is a 1991 graduate of Aurora Christian, a 1995 graduate of Trinity International University and played professional basketball in Europe from 1995 through 2006.

Davidson and his wife, Lisa, have been married nearly 25 years. The Lord has blessed them with seven children – Wesley, 23, William, 21, Frankie, 19, Marcus, 17, Jimmy, 15, and twins Isaiah and Jaela, both 9.

Marc Urban, Chesterton

Marc UrbanMarc Urban is an IBCA District 1 Coach of the Year after recently completing his fourth season as the boys’ basketball coach at Chesterton, where his Trojans went 23-3 while winning the Duneland Conference championship at 7-0.

In four seasons at Chesterton, Urban’s teams have amassed a 79-23 record and won the program’s first sectional after a 31-year wait in 2019.

Urban is a 2001 graduate of Lake Central, where he played basketball and football. He matriculated to Indiana State, where he served as a men’s basketball manager for Royce Waltman and graduated in 2006.

Upon graduation, Urban returned to Lake Central, working as a boys’ basketball assistant coach for six years for Dave Milausnic, helping the boys to conference and sectional titles in 2012. Urban then moved to the Lake Central girls’ program, guiding the team to 80-17 record that included sectional titles 2013 in 2015 was well as conference crowns in 2015 and 2016. Urban was voted an IBCA girls’ IBCA District 1 Coach of the Year in 2015 and was The Times of Northwest Indiana and the Gary Post-Tribune girls’ Coach of the Year in 2015. He also currently serves as an IBCA district representative.

Urban teaches physical education and credit-recovery classes at Chesterton.

He and his wife, Traci, have two daughters – Grace, 7, and Averie, 4.

District 2

Al Gooden, Lawrence Central

Al GoodenAl Gooden is an IBCA District 2 Coach of the Year after leading Lawrence Central to a 22-3 season that included the championship of the Raymond James Hall of Fame Classic and a co-championship of the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference.

Gooden has compiled a 100-45 ledger in six seasons with the Bears, including a sectional crown in 2019. In 32 seasons as a varsity coach, he is 492-273.

His varsity resume includes a 17-24 record in two years at Heritage (1987-89), a 321-206 mark in 21 seasons at Fort Wayne Harding (1989-2011) and a 54-14 slate in three seasons at New Haven (2011-14). In his time at Harding, his teams won 10 sectionals, six regionals, five semi-states and the Class 2A state championship in 2001. In addition, one of his New Haven squads claimed a sectional trophy.

Gooden is a 1977 graduate of Fort Wayne Wayne, where he competed in both basketball and football for four years. He went on to Ball State, where he played basketball for four years and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1981. He was a part of the Cardinals’ 1980-81 squad that competed in the 1981 NCAA Tournament, falling to Boston College 93-90 in the first round.

He began his coaching career as an assistant coach for three seasons at Fort Wayne Elmhurst prior to becoming head coach at Heritage.

Gooden was an Indiana All-Star assistant coach in 2005 and an IBCA District 1 Coach of the Year in 2012. He also was Marion County Coach of the Year in 2019. He also served on the IBCA Board of Directors in the 1995-96 season.

Gooden and his wife, Felicia, have three children and six grandchildren.

David McCollough, Shenandoah

David McColloughDavid McCollough is an IBCA District 2 Coach of the Year after leading Shenandoah to a 23-2 season that included championships of the Henry County Tournament, the Mid-Eastern Conference and the Hagerstown Sectional.

He is 111-17 in five seasons at Shenandoah, including four sectional titles and one regional crown. He has an overall record of 576-250 in 36 seasons as a varsity basketball coach.

While head coach at North Judson-San Pierre for 11 seasons (1983-94), McCollough’s teams won 157 games and five sectional titles. He followed with 20 seasons at Noblesville (1994-2014), where his teams won 308 games, three sectionals and one regional during his time with the Millers. He also coached a Mr. Basketball in Tom Coverdale in 1998.

McCollough’s teams overall have captured 12 sectional titles, two regional trophies and 13 conference championships. He was the 2000 Indiana All-Star coach, served on the IBCA Board of Directors in 1997-98, as the IBCA president from 2000 to 2003 and for numerous years on the IBCA poll. Overall, he has provided has 24 years of service to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

A graduate of Manchester University and Indiana University, McCollough has been voted an IBCA Coach of the Year on three previous occasions – in 1997 for District 3, in 2007 for District 2 and in 2016 for District 2. His elementary travel teams through his varsity teams run the basics of the motion offense and rely on man-to-man defensive principles.

McCollough and his wife, Bren, have four children: Kelsey Dabenmeier, a Ball State graduate and elementary teacher in Lafayette; Kirk, an IU Kelley School of Business graduate working in graphic design in Indianapolis; Kiley, a Wittenberg University graduate working for Ohio Health; and Kaden, a 17-year-old high school junior.

District 3

Nate Hawkins, Heritage Hills

Nate HawkinsNate Hawkins is an IBCA District 3 Coach of the Year after leading Heritage Hills to a 22-3 season that included championships of the Pocket Athletic Conference and the Boonville Sectional.

In eight seasons as a varsity coach, Hawkins’ teams have posted a 143-44 record with five PAC championships, four sectional titles and two regional crowns. That includes a 79-18 mark with three conference titles and one sectional trophy at Heritage Hills. He also previously led Forest Park to a 66-22 ledger with two league crowns, three sectional championships and two regional championships from 2009-13.

Hawkins is a 1998 graduate of Forest Park, where he played basketball and was the team’s mental attitude award winner. He went on to the University of Southern Indiana, graduating in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health.

He began his coaching career as an assistant to Tom Beach at Forest Park, helping guide the Rangers to Class 2A state championships in 2005 and 2006. Hawkins previously was an IBCA District 3 Coach of the Year in 2011. He has been named an assistant coach for the 2020 Indiana All-Stars.

Hawkins currently works in outside sales for Winsupply.

He and his wife, Tammy, have two children – Aleigha, 13, and Kinley, 10.

Kendall Wildey, South Decatur

Kendall WildeyKendall Wildey is an IBCA District 3 Coach of the Year after leading South Decatur to a 24-2 season that included championships of the Edinburgh Holiday Tournament, the Mid-Hoosier Conference and the North Decatur Sectional.

Wildey is 35-39 in three seasons with the Cougars, and he has a 203-165 record in 16 seasons as a boys’ varsity coach. This season’s sectional title was the program’s first since 2008 and just its fifth overall since South Decatur opened in the 1968-69 academic year.

A 1980 graduate of Jennings County High School, Wildey competed in basketball, baseball and football for the Panthers and was the JCHS Athlete of the Year as a senior. He was selected all-Hoosier Hills Conference, all-sectional and all-regional after leading his team in assists and free throw accuracy in basketball in 1980. He also won the team’s Gold Glove Award in baseball in 1980.

He later earned an associate’s degree from Glen Oaks Community College in Michigan in 1982, where he played basketball and baseball. Wildey went on to play baseball at for one season at West Virginia University (hitting .357) and one season at Georgetown College in Kentucky. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown College in 1985 and a master’s degree from IU-Southeast in 1994.

Wildey began his coaching career as a boys’ basketball assistant coach at Jennings County in 1985. He then became a head coach, guiding Waldron to a 40-24 record over three seasons (1987-90), Rushville to a 3-18 mark in one season (1990-91) and Jennings County to a 125-84 ledger over nine seasons (1991-2000). At Jennings County, his teams won five sectionals (1993, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998) and one regional (1998).

Wildey also had three stints totaling 14 seasons as the Jennings County softball coach, leading the Panthers to four sectional titles, one regional crown and one Class 4A final four appearance. He was the 2010 ICGSA District 4 Coach of the Year in softball. He currently is in his fourth season as softball coach at Columbus Christian School.

A teacher or administrator in a 35-year career in education, Wildey started as an English teacher and then became an assistant principal at Jennings County from 1993-2000. He stopped coaching when he was promoted to principal at Jennings County from 2000-08, then served as the Jennings County director of curriculum and instruction from 2008-12. He now is in his eighth year as superintendent of Columbus Christian School.

Wildey served as executive director of the Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association for 13 years and was inducted into the HBCA Hall of Excellence in 2015. He also was an IBCA District 3 Administrator of the Year in 2008 and was inducted into the inaugural Jennings County Alumni Hall of Fame in 2012. He also has served as an associate pastor at East Columbus Christian Church since 2015.

Wildey and his wife, Sandy, have five adult children – Alivia, Ariah, Kamonica, Shane and Hunter – and 10 grandchildren.
