Indiana-Kentucky Challenge Cup

The IBCA calendar in 2019-20 again will include the Indiana-Kentucky Challenge Cup. This year, the seventh annual event will be played Dec. 14, 2019, and include seven games (four boys games, three girls games) at two Kentucky venues.

Three games will be played at Scott County High School in Georgetown, Ky. Four games will be played at Great Crossing High School at Georgetown, Ky. Teams representing Indiana are the Covenant Christian (Indianapolis), East Central and Silver Creek girls’ teams as well as the Cambridge City Lincoln, Christian Academy of Indiana, Jeffersonville and Southridge boys’ teams.

The event is being coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches. The schedule for the day is (times listed are EST):

At Scott County High School

  • Boys: Christian Academy of Indiana vs. LaRue County, Ky., 2 p.m.
  • Girls: East Central vs. Scott County, Ky., 4 p.m.
  • Boys: Jeffersonville vs. Scott County, Ky., 4 p.m.

At Great Crossing High School

  • Boys: Cambridge City Lincoln vs. Great Crossing, Ky., 2 p.m.
  • Boys: Southridge vs. Collins, Ky., 4 p.m.
  • Girls: Silver Creek vs. Ryle, Ky., 6 p.m.
  • Girls: Covenant Christian (Indianapolis) vs. Great Crossing, Ky., 8 p.m.

Kentucky is 5-1 over the years in the series. Kentucky prevailed 4-1 in 2013-14 season in Louisville’s Freedom Hall, 3-2 in 2014-15 in New Castle Fieldhouse, 3-2 in 2015-16 in the Frankfort (Ky.) Convention Central, 3-2 in 2016-17 in New Castle Fieldhouse and 5-0 in 2017-18 at Central Hardin (Ky.) High School. Last season, in 2018-19, Indiana claimed a 3-2 decision over Kentucky in New Castle Fieldhouse.

In six years, the event has raised about $30,000 for charities, including the Wounded Warrior Program as well as the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame.

Admission is $8 per person. Military service veterans and their immediate families will be admitted at no charge. Tickets will be available from participating schools or on game day at either host school.

A best-of-seven game format will determine the winner of the 2019-2020 Challenge Cup. The 14 participating teams feature multiple NCAA Division I prospects. Proceeds from the 2019-2020 event again will go to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame.

Plans are for this event to be hosted at an Indiana site in the 2020-21 season.
