IBCA/IHSAA college exposure events

Some of the top players with returning high school eligibility in the state participated in the 17th annual IBCA/IHSAA Boys' Showcase on June 22, in the IBCA/IHSAA Boys’ Team Showcase in memory of Charlie Hughes on June 28-30 and in the 17th annual IBCA/IHSAA Girls’ Showcase on July 15.

During the summer of 2018, the NCAA and National Federation of State High School Associations directed state high school associations to host scholastic basketball events for boys during 2019. After a year of planning, your IBCA stepped up and held two events during the month of June during the “open” recruiting period.

The first event was the IBCA/IHSAA Showcase event on June 22. About 120 of Indiana’s top boys basketball players came together to compete at Ben Davis High School. These players participated in drill work and scrimmages, as well an educational component provided by the NCAA. Thanks to the many volunteer coaches that helped to make this event possible under the leadership of Brian Satterfield.

Eighty-two coaches from 60 colleges attended the Showcase to observe. This gave many players the opportunity to be seen and evaluated by college coaches. This was the 17th year the IBCA has hosted this event that is now being modeled around the country by other state associations.

The second event was the IBCA/IHSAA Boys’ Team Showcase in memory of Charlie Hughes. This was a new undertaking for the IBCA. With 104 different varsity teams playing four games over three days at three venues, this was a huge event. More than 150 coaches from 95 colleges attended this event on June 28-30. This was a tremendous opportunity for Indiana high school coaches to end their summer developmental season. It also was a terrific opportunity for players to be seen and evaluated by college coaches.

The IBCA would like to thank the 104 high school coaches who brought their team to participate. The IBCA also would like to thank Ryan Osborn, Brian Hahn and Brian Satterfield for their efforts in hosting games at their schools. The IBCA would also like to thank the Charlie Hughes Foundation for their efforts with this event.

Net proceeds from the Boys’ Team Showcase were donated to Riley Children’s Hospital, the IBCA Scholarship Fund and other charitable organizations.

Planning for the summer of 2020 already has begun. Your suggestions to make the events better were well received and are being considered on how to implement your ideas. You may mark your calendars for the last two weekends in June for 2020 (June 20, 2020, for the IBCA/IHSAA Boys’ Showcase; June 26-28, 2020, for the IBCA/IHSAA Boys’ Team Showcase in memory of Charlie Hughes).

As one college coach stated in his feedback of the two events, “Indiana High School Basketball Coaches know what they are doing, and do it first class.”

For the 2019 IBCA/IHSAA Girls’ Showcase, 26 coaches from 26 colleges attended to observe and evaluate about 120 players. The 2020 IBCA/IHSAA Girls’ Showcase tentatively has been set for July 13, 2020.

The IBCA would like to thank the IHSAA, McDonald's, Gatorade, Champion, BSN Sports (Dan Repass and Bob Kizer) and the IHSAA basketball officials who called the scrimmages and all the high school coaches for their support in making these events successful.
