Here is information from an IBCA survey conducted in September 2018. This information helps the IBCA board of directors formulate ideas to support HS basketball coaches. Here are the results:
Question 1: In an attempt to equalize the summer participation rule for all sports, the IHSAA is considering possible changes to the summer participation rule. Instead of the current participation rule for summer, the HS coach would identify contact days that they would be allowed to work with their players (individual skill work, games, team practice, team camps/shootouts). You would have a certain number of days to identify (example: 25 days in June / July). For the rest of June / July (with the exception of July 4th week), you would be allowed conditioning / weight training.
Result: Head coaches voted 38% in favor of identifying days for summer contact and 58% prefer the present summer rule.
Question 2: The new in-school, out-of-season participation rule allows a coach to have practice for 2 hours per day twice per week as well as conditioning/weight training on other days for a certain number of weeks (present weeks for each sport: GBB 13, BBB 16, Base 21, SB 20, FB 15, BSC 15, GSC 15, VB 15).
Result: Head coaches voted 45% that they like the new rule; 36% feel that all sports should have the same number of weeks.
Question 3: I feel that having the four hours per week to use how it is best for my situation at my school would be the best (for example: four one-hour sessions rather than two two-hour sessions).
Result: Head coaches voted 72% that they want to use the four hours per week how it is best for the situation at their school. 23% feel they should be told how to use the hours.
Responses were evenly distributed by gender and by class.
