Boys
Class 4A: Criss Beyers guided Warren Central to a 32-0 record, including a 54-48 victory over Carmel for the Class 4A championship. Beyers has a 63-15 record in three seasons with the Warriors, and he is 76-25 in four season as a boys’ varsity head coach. Beyers severed 27 seasons as a boys’ basketball assistant over four stints at Bloomington South – 1979-80, 1982-95, 2001-12 and 2013-15. In between, he was a men’s basketball graduate assisted for one year at Indiana University (1981-82), the girls’ varsity coach for five seasons at Bloomington South (1995-2000) and the boys’ varsity coach for one season at Martinsville (2012-13).
Class 3A: Mark Galloway directed Culver Academy to 23-6 effort that included a 64-49 decision over Evansville Bosse for the Class 3A trophy. Galloway has led the Eagles to a 108-82 record in eight seasons, and he is 243-132 in 16 seasons as a boys’ varsity coach. Previously, he was 135-50 in eight seasons at Carmel. He also was an assistant coach for one season at South Bend Adams (1995-96), two seasons at Penn (1996-98) and four seasons at Carmel (1998-2002) before becoming the Greyhounds’ head coach (2002-10).
Class 2A: Kevin Renbarger led Oak Hill to a 26-5 campaign, including a 56-44 triumph over Forest Park for the Class 2A crown. His teams have posted a 200-101 record in 13 seasons with the Golden Eagles. Renbarger began his coaching career as a girls’ basketball assistant to Mike McCroskey at Kokomo in 1994-95. He then returned to Oak Hill, his alma mater, in a variety of roles in the boys’ basketball program from 1995-2005 before being named the Golden Eagles’ head coach in the spring of 2005.
Class A: Scott McClelland guided Morristown to a 28-2 season, including an 89-60 victory over Southwood for the Class A title. McClelland has a 186-152 record in 15 seasons as a boys’ varsity coach. That total includes a 73-78 mark in a previous seven-year stint at Morristown (2003-10), a 25-16 record in two seasons at Brebeuf Jesuit (2010-12), a 31-35 slate in three years at Western Boone (2012-15) and a 57-23 ledger so far in his second tenure at Morristown (2015-present). He also guided the Wapahani girls in 1998-99 to an 11-11 record and has been a boys’ basketball assistant at Blue River Valley, Cathedral and Scecina.
Girls
Class 4A: Stacy E. Mitchell guided Warren Central to a 20-7 record and a 50-46 victory over Zionsville for the Class 4A crown. Mitchell has compiled a 44-31 record in three seasons with the Warriors. He previously was a men’s basketball assistant at Tennessee-Martin, his alma mater. He also was a boys’ basketball assistant for one year at Syracuse Cochran (N.Y.), a boys’ middle school head coach for two years at Indianapolis Marshall, a boys’ assistant for two years at Brebeuf Jesuit, a boys’ assistant for one year at Crispus Attucks and a boys’ basketball assistant for seven years at Warren Central.
Class 3A: Kathie Layden led Northwestern to a 29-1 record and a 63-42 triumph over Greensburg for the Class 3A championship. Layden has compiled a 98-45 slate in six seasons with the Tigers and has a career record of 280-145 over 18 seasons as a varsity coach that includes 11 seasons at Tri-Central and one season at Western. Layden began her coaching career as an assistant for one season at Tri-Central. She then became the Trojans’ head coach in the spring of 1999 and guided that program to a 171-90 mark, including Class A state crowns in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
Class 2A: Josh Treesh directed Central Noble to a 23-5 season that included a 46-42 victory over Winchester for the Class 2A trophy. Treesh is 98-71 over seven years in two stints as the Cougars’ coach. He went 25-38 while leading the team from 2007-10. He has gone 73-33 from 2014-present. In between, Treesh was an East Noble boys’ assistant from 2010-12 and was the East Noble boys’ head coach in 2012-13. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach in 2006-07 at East Noble, his alma mater, before becoming the Central Noble girls head coach in the spring of 2007.
Class A: Katie Collignon led Marquette Catholic to a 27-2 season that included a 38-31 decision over Vincennes Rivet for the Class A title. Collignon is 48-8 in two seasons as the coach of the Blazers. The Michigan native and Ferris State University graduate previously was an assistant coach for four seasons with the Valparaiso University women’s basketball program.
