Indiana All-Stars

By Charlie Hall

The 2017 IndyStar Indiana All-Star Games with Kentucky drew 6,466 fans to Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Moving forward, the 2018 games are coming together as we speak.

All 12 coaches and the Girls Seniors have been announced along with both Junior teams. The Boys Seniors should be ready to go in early to mid-April.

The Indiana All-Stars will play the Kentucky All-Stars on Saturday, June 9 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The girls’ game will tip off at 5:00 p.m., and the boys’ game will follow. If you want to bring your team, we will sell you $18 tickets for $10. E-mail me at chall33@msn.com or call me at 765-480-2665.

The Kentucky All-Stars will host the Indiana All-Stars on Friday, June 8 at Bellarmine University’s Knights Hall in Louisville. The girls’ game will begin at 6:00 p.m., with the boys’ game to follow.

There are several changes to the All-Star program this year.

  • First, the All-Stars will gather as a group on Tuesday, June 5 and play just one exhibition game against the Junior All-Stars – that on Wednesday, June 6 at a site to be determined.
  • Second, the Junior All-Star series against the Kentucky Junior All-Stars has been revived. The Juniors previously played Kentucky in 2012, 2013 and 2014, but there were no such games in 2015, 2016 or 2017. They resume this year with home-and-home contests on Saturday, June 2 (in Kentucky, site TBA, girls at 2 p.m., boys to follow) and Sunday, June 3 (in Indiana, site TBA, girls at 2 p.m., boys to follow).
  • The two changes above mean there will be three games each for the Senior All-Stars and Junior All-Stars. The Indiana Seniors and Indiana Juniors each will play one game against each other and each will play two games against the Kentucky All-Stars of their graduating class.
  • Lastly, the changes have resulted in the Junior All-Star teams being expanded to 24 players for both boys and girls – a Core Group of six players, plus six players each in North, Central and South groups. The Core Group will play in all three games. The South Group will join the Core Group for the June 2 game against the Kentucky Juniors in Kentucky. The Central and North groups will play with the Core Group either June 3 against the Kentucky Juniors in Indiana or June 6 against the Indiana Seniors. The Central and North group dates and opponents will be announced once all the teams and game sites are finalized.

The Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball winners will be announced April 29 at the Indiana Sports Awards Dinner. The girls’ finalists are Angel Baker of Pike, Leigha Brown of DeKalb, Amy Dilk of Carmel, Katlyn Gilbert of Heritage Christian and Kayana Traylor of Martinsville. The list of boys’ finalists will be forthcoming.

The 84-team All-Star Shootout will be Saturday, June 9 at Best Choice Fieldhouse and at Ben Davis. I want to thank Steve Witty and the IBCA volunteers who make the Shootout work.

I also want to thank Rob New and Best Choice Fieldhouse for continuing as our presenting sponsor. Our agreement runs through the 2020 games and will put the total to nine years of what has and will be unprecedented run of generosity for the All-Star series.

Another key All-Star supporter is Bob Kizer and BSN Sports, which will provide more than $10,000 worth of equipment and uniforms for the fourth straight year. In addition, Pacers Sports & Entertainment, Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Marian University, MCL Cafeteria, McDonald’s, Patriot Insurance and Franciscan Health Sports Medicine are on board again.

Hope to see you all on June 9 at the Fieldhouse.

Beat Kentucky!

– Charlie Hall
