Indiana-Kentucky Challenge Cup

The third annual Indiana-Kentucky Challenge Cup was played Jan. 9 at the Frankfort (Ky.) Convention Center. The event is a five-game competition between teams from Indiana and Kentucky, coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches.

Kentucky won the event for the third consecutive season, this time taking a 3-2 edge in the five games. Over three years, Kentucky has won 4-1, 3-2 and 3-2.

The 2016 results were:

Girls: Columbus North 50, Franklin County (Ky.) 40
Boys: Madison Southern (Ky.) 55, Wood Memorial 53
Boys: Cooper (Ky.) 45, Jay County 37
Boys: New Albany 55, Lexington (Ky.) Dunbar 47
Boys: Owen County (Ky.) 72, Forest Park 55

Proceeds from the event benefited the Indiana and Kentucky basketball halls of fame. The “Challenge Cup” is on display at the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame.

The fourth annual Indiana-Kentucky Challenge Cup is scheduled for Jan. 7, 2017, and will be played at the New Castle Fieldhouse. An IBCA committee will choose the teams from Indiana for the event.

If your team is interested, please contact IBCA assistant director Tom Beach at tabeach@anderson.edu.

This is not an “exempt” event, so playing in this event must be within the IHSAA schedule limits.
