A roundtable of veteran or former coaches is one of the items planned for the 2015 IBCA Spring Clinic. This year’s panel features a trio of coaches – Larry Angle, Tom May and Pat Rady – who will offer their expertise on building programs that stand the test of time.
Here is more info on each of the panelists.
Larry Angle
Larry Angle was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame after compiling a 389-139 record during a lengthy career as a varsity boys’ basketball coach.
Angle served as head coach at Rushville, Carmel, Tipton, Greenfield-Central and Indian Creek, guiding those schools to 10 sectional titles, four regional crowns, one semistate winner and a 1976 state runner-up finish.
The state runner-up effort came at Rushville, and his teams always were considered fundamentally strong and difficult to play. Over the years, he coached six players who were named Indiana All-Stars. In addition, Angle himself served as an All-Star assistant coach four times – in 1976, 1977, 1983 and 1987.
Angle is a 1961 graduate of New Salem High School, where he finished second in the state in scoring as a senior with a 30.3 average. He then went to Utah State, where he was a starting forward and helped the Aggies to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1963 and 1964. Angle’s name remains in the USU record book as the team’s leading scorer as a senior in 1965-66 (16.5 ppg), the team’s top free throw shooter in 1965-66 (.836) and a leader for free throw accuracy in a game (13-of-13 on Feb. 26, 1966).
Angle served on the IBCA Board of Directors in 1989-90 and was IBCA president in 1993.
Angle’s son, J.R., was a standout player at Indian Creek and later played at the University of Iowa. He now is an assistant coach at Greenfield-Central.
Tom May
Tom May was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009 after serving as varsity girls’ basketball coach Crown Point High School for 26 years with a record of 442-172.
May’s teams won state championships in 1984 and 1985. His Lady Bulldogs also finished as state runners-up in 1983 and 1997 as well as capturing seven regionals and 15 sectionals.
May has been the only two-time head coach of the Indiana Girls' All-Stars, guiding the squad in 1984 and 1992. His program placed 40 players into the collegiate ranks, and he was able to coach seven Indiana All-Stars while at Crown Point. He was named Indiana Coach of the Year three times, Northwest Indiana Coach of the Year six times and IBCA District 1 Coach of the Year three times.
Besides working as a coach, May was also one of the state’s top boys’ basketball officials for many years. He worked the boys’ State Finals at Market Square Arena in 1987 and at the Hoosier Dome in 1991 along with numerous semistates, regionals and sectionals. He continued to officiate since retiring from coaching, but he recently decided that 2014-15 would be his final season as an official.
May also worked as a color analyst with Jerry Baker and Hilliard Gates for numerous boys’ basketball and girls’ basketball State Finals telecasts. He also was a commentator for the games between the Indiana and Kentucky champions held in the late 1980s.
Pat Rady
Pat Rady has completed 51 seasons as a varsity boys’ basketball coach, owning a career record of 761-421. That includes a 21-6 mark and Class 2A sectional championship at Cloverdale in 2014-15.
Rady has coached the Clovers the past 11 seasons, compiling a 143-107 with the Putnam County school.
Earlier this school year, Rady was chosen national Boys’ Basketball Coach of the Year for the 2013-14 season by the National Federation of State High School Associations. The NFHS has been recognizing coaches since 1982.
Rady began his career as eighth-grade coach for one season at Scribner Junior High in New Albany. He then became a high school varsity coach and coached five seasons at Bainbridge (83-33), five years at Winchester (79-33), one year at Southmont (9-12), five years at Shelbyville (72-56), 24 years at Terre Haute South (375-180) and now has completed 11 seasons at Cloverdale.
His teams have won 20 sectionals, eight regionals and one semistate. He was the Indiana All-Star coach in 1989 and has been inducted into the Hanover College, Indiana Basketball, Terre Haute South and Montgomery County halls of fame. On Dec. 26, 2014, Terre Haute South named its basketball coach in honor of the school's former coach. There also is a street named after Rady – "Pat Rady Way" – in Bainbridge.
