Indiana-Kentucky Challenge Cup

A new item on the IBCA calendar in 2013-14 was the Indiana-Kentucky Challenge Cup, a five-game event between teams from Indiana and Kentucky. The event was coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches.

The first Challenge Cup was held on Jan. 11 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, and Kentucky captured the Cup crown by winning four of five games that day.

Girls: Elizabethtown (Ky.) 52, Roncalli 39
Boys: Elizabethtown (Ky.) 51, Barr-Reeve 40
Boys: Covington Catholic (Ky.) 63, Corydon Central 43
Boys: Park Tudor 90, Hopkinsville (Ky.) 83, OT
Boys: Louisville Ballard (Ky.) 77, Guerin Catholic 71

In addition to the games, there was a cheering section competition. Also, a Job Fair was held for military service veterans. Veterans and their immediate families were admitted at no charge, and proceeds from the event benefited the Wounded Warrior Program as well as the Indiana and Kentucky basketball halls of fame.

The “Challenge Cup” is on display at the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame.

The second Indiana-Kentucky Challenge Cup is scheduled for Jan. 10, 2015, and will be played in the New Castle Fieldhouse. An IBCA committee will choose the teams from Indiana for the event.

If your team is interested, please contact IBCA assistant director Tom Beach at tabeach@anderson.edu.

This is not an “exempt” event, so playing in this event must be within the IHSAA schedule limits.
