NFHS Coach of the Year nominees

Stacy Meyer of Greensburg and Steve Goans of Evansville Mater Dei have been chosen as Indiana’s nominees for the National Federation of State High School Associations national basketball coaches of the year.

Meyer, a graduate of Greensburg High School and Hanover College, guided the Pirates to a 26-1 record and the boys’ Class 3A state championship in 2012-13. He also was an IBCA District 3 Coach of the Year in 2012 and served as an Indiana Junior All-Star assistant coach in 2012.

Meyer’s career record in 12 seasons as a high school head coach is 176-103, including a 118-47 mark in seven years at Greensburg. He previously coached at Southwestern (Shelby) and Whiteland.

Goans guided Evansville Mater Dei to a 28-2 record that included a 62-42 victory over Eastern (Greentown) for a second consecutive girls’ Class 2A state championship.

Goans has posted a 109-37 record the past six seasons at Mater Dei and has a 181-120 mark in two stints with the Wildcats over 15 seasons (he coached the team from 1980-89 and from 2007-present). He is a 1976 graduate of Mater Dei, and his teams have won sectionals in 1986, 2010, 2012 and 2013.
