2010-11 Championship coaches

 
 
 

Boys

Class 4A: J.R. Holmes, Bloomington South.
Holmes’ team went 26-2 and beat Kokomo 56-42 in the state championship game. J.R. has gone 512-172 in 29 seasons at Bloomington South, and he is 655-290 overall in 41 seasons as a head coach. His team also won the 2009 Class 4A championship and was named USA Today National Coach of the Year that season. He previously coached two seasons at Tunnelton and 10 seasons at Mitchell. Holmes is a 1965 graduate of Needmore High School and a 1969 graduate of Indiana State.

Class 3A: Gene Miiller, Washington.
Miiller’s Hatchets went 24-4 and defeated Culver Academy 61-46 in the state title game. Gene is 129-22 in six seasons at Washington and 597-250 in 36 seasons as a head coach. His team also won Class 3A titles in 2008 and 2010. He previously coached at Kankakee Valley, Vincennes Lincoln and Lafayette Jeff. Miiller is a 1971 graduate of South Newton High School and a 1975 graduate of Wabash College.

Class 2A: Ed Schilling, Park Tudor.
Schilling’s Panthers went 26-2 and edged Hammond Bishop Noll 43-42 in the championship game. Ed is 41-13 in two seasons at Park Tudor and 119-92 overall in nine seasons as a high school head coach (31-33 in three years at Western Boone and 47-46 in four years at Logansport). He had a 75-93 record in six seasons as coach at Wright State University. He also has been a NBA assistant for the New Jersey Nets and a college assistant at Memphis and Massachusetts. Schilling is a 1984 graduate of Lebanon High School and a 1988 graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Class A: Nick Reich, Indianapolis Metropolitan.
Reich’s Pumas went 22-6 and topped Triton 59-55 in the final game. Reich went 49-41 in four seasons at Metropolitan and since has resigned as coach to focus on his job as director of youth services for Goodwill Industries. Reich is a 1996 graduate of Evansville Reitz High School and attended IUPUI.



Girls

Class 4A: Chad Gilbert, Jeffersonville.
Gilbert’s Red Devils went 28-2 and defeated Penn 43-29 in the state championship game. Chad’s record in 11 seasons with the Jeff girls was 220-43, including seven Hoosier Hills Conference and six sectional crowns. After the season, Gilbert was hired to become coach of the Jeffersonville boys' team for 2011-12. Gilbert previously was a boys' assistant for two years, one each at Evansville Central and Perry Central. He also was head coach at River Valley Middle School in Jeffersonville for two years. Gilbert is a 1991 graduate of Charlestown High School and a 1996 graduate of the University of Southern Indiana.

Class 3A: Bruce Dockery, Evansville Memorial.
Dockery’s Tigers went 28-1 and outlasted Benton Central 58-50 in overtime to win the state title. Dockery’s teams have gone 388-131 in 23 seasons at Memorial, where he also serves as athletic director. Dockery is a 1969 graduate of Evansville Bosse High School and a 1978 graduate of the University of Southern Indiana.

Class 2A: Denny Renier, Fort Wayne Bishop Luers.
Renier’s Knights went 24-2 and beat Brownstown Central 59-46 in the title game. Renier is 42-10 in two seasons at Luers after serving 22 years as an assistant coach at the school. He is a 1961 graduate of New Haven High School.

Class A: Tim Young, Vincennes Rivet.
Young’s Patriots went 28-0 and topped Turkey Run 49-40. Young's teams have gone 96-7 in his four seasons with the Patriots. His teams were Class A state runner-up in 2009 and 2010. He previously was an assistant coach for eight seasons at Vincennes Lincoln. Young is a 1977 graduate of South Knox and graduated from Purdue in 1982.
