Boys' Coaches of the Year

 
 
 

Jason Groves

District 1 - Triton High School

Jason GrovesA graduate of John Glenn High School, Jason went on to play for Mike Lightfoot at Bethel College which won a national championship. He later taught at West Central High School for two years and then became junior varsity coach at Triton from 2000-2005. His squads have done progressively better each year, starting at 4-17 in 2004-05. The Trojans finished the season 25-2 and won the 1A State Championship.


Tom Peller

District 1 - Chesterton

Tom PellerTom is a 1983 graduate of the University of Indianapolis. He was an assistant at Merrillville and Chesterton before assuming the Trojans' head coach position in 2003. This past season Coach Peller led Chesterton to a 19-3 record and were ranked in the IBCA Coaches' Poll Top 10 most of the season. His six year overall coaching record is 83-45


Travis Daugherty

District 2 - Tipton High School

Travis DaughertyTravis graduated from Alexandria High School and Anderson University. He launched his career under the mentorship of coaching legend Garth Cone. After two years as an assistant with Cone, Travis took over the direction of the Tipton Blue Devils in 2004-05. He's enhanced the win column each year. He led this year's team to its first ever Hoosier Conference title with an undefeated 6-0 record. In fact, his squad spent much of the current season as the Associated Press' No. 1 team in Class 2A and reached as high as No. 9 in the IBCA coaches poll.


Mark Galloway

District 2 - Carmel High School

Mark Galloway Coach Galloway is a graduate of Plainfield High School and Bethel College. He is 102-36 in six years at Carmel. This past season the Greyhounds were 18-2 and Co-MIC Conference Champs for the first time in school history. In 2006, Mark led the Grayhounds to a Hamilton County Championship and to sectional championships in both 2006 and 2008.




J.R. Holmes

District 3 - Bloomington South High School

J.R. HolmesCoach J.R. Holmes is wrapping up his 38th year in coaching with a record of 580 wins---almost 15 victories every season! He's coached at Tunnelton, Mitchell and at Bloomington South high schools. His teams have won eleven sectionals and six regionals. J.R. has led his teams to 10 conference titles and he's had three different teams in the IHSAA's Final Four. This year he is working on Bloomington South's fourth consecutive twenty plus win season.


Jim Shannon

District 3 - New Albany

A graduate of Anderson High School and Ball State University, Jim Shannon is in this 24th year as head coach and 28th year overall. His overall record stands at 341 wins and 197 losses, and includes 8 sectional championships, 1 regional championship, and 12 conference championships. Coach Shannon’s record at New Albany, where his teams have won 5 sectional champions and 6 conference championships, is 176 wins versus 58 losses.

This is Jim’s second IBCA District Coach of the Year Award. He has been involved with coaching the North-South All-Star Game, the Junior All-Stars, the Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association District All-Star Game, and the Indiana All-Stars. He, and his wife Tammy, are proud parents of Spencer and Allyson.
