The IBCA has established a new Aspiring Head Coaches program with support from the IHSAA and the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. This program is designed to create an awareness of the necessary skills to becoming a head coach.
The course includes four topics on the following days:
- Sept. 28: Basketball 101. Basketball 101 is a fundamental approach to improving one's knowledge base regarding basketball and to create a broad approach to potential resources.
- Nov. 16: Other Than Coaching. Other Than Coaching looks at many of the tasks that head coaches may or may not be ready for, including but not limited to culture, fund raising, establishing a staff, equipment, liability, etc.
- Feb. 15: Interview Process. The Interview Process looks at the processes and procedures one might expect with obtaining a job.
- April 23-24: Evaluation Process. The Evaluation Process looks at multiple ways that coaches are evaluated, including but not limited to professionalism, relationships, communication, player development, game-day scheme, etc.
The first three meetings are Zoom gatherings and the final meeting is an in-person gathering at the annual IBCA Clinic (so make sure you register for and plan to attend that event). At that final meeting, those who are a part of all four meetings will receive a “Certificate of Completion” that can be presented to potential employers when one has a job interview. In addition, teachers may be able to use the “Certificate of Completion” for Professional Growth Points for license renewal.
The IBCA’s Aspiring Coaches Program is being overseen by Kip Staggs, athletic director and former boys’ basketball coach at Martinsville, and Doug Springer, girls’ basketball coach at Northridge.
If you are interested in being a part of this program or have questions about it, please contact Coach Staggs (kip.staggs@msdmartinsville.org) or Coach Springer (springerd@mcsin-k12.org).
